An defense minister has revealed that the MoD is currently investigating the potential threats posed by Chinese cars, and personnel have been instructed to refrain from talking about classified matters in all cars.
Security Advice for Defence Personnel
During a recent appearance on a radio station, Luke Pollard commented on claims that MoD staff have been told not to talk about classified information while travelling in China-made cars.
He stated that the ministry is “examining” Chinese vehicles within its fleets, but stressed that security is a concern in every modern vehicles.
We have a collection of thousands of cars in the Ministry of Defence and Chinese ones account for a very small number.
But whether you’re driving a vehicle from China or a non-Chinese car, what we’ve asked our staff is to avoid connecting MoD technology into their vehicle, not to have conversations at a secret classification in any kind of car, due to the growing threats of eavesdropping that are present in every single automobile, to only have those confidential conversations in protected areas. That’s a prudent and sensible thing for anyone concerned about security.
After it was suggested that it would be wise for the MoD to cease using all Chinese vehicles, Pollard responded: ‘That’s exactly what we are looking into at the moment.”
Broader Defence Context
The revelation comes as claims from Scandinavian countries have warned the UK to the existence of multi-purpose kill switches in Chinese buses, which could allow the Chinese government to disable buses and cause disruption to transport systems.
Additionally, a Russia intelligence vessel was reportedly shining laser beams at Royal Air Force aircrew, labeled a “highly dangerous” action by defence officials.
The broader security situation highlights the importance of strong protocols and vigilance in every areas of official activities, including vehicle use to communication practices.
